My First Solitary Retreat

Later this week I will be heading to Milarepa Center in Barnet, VT. Milarepa is a private Tibetan Buddhist Retreat Center “dedicated to inspiring the highest potential in all beings...”

I had filled out an application only a few weeks ago and got in touch with Dawn, the director at Milarepa Center. She asked me a bit about my past experience with retreats (which is none) and we determined that a couple nights would be best since I have no established teacher and no prior experience going on retreats.

In fact, the reason I wanted to try this is because someday I would like to go on a longer more formal retreat. I’m a bit scared, because I don’t think I have the discipline necessary to follow a strict schedule the way that others may. After a couple days I might feel like rebelling and wanting to go my own way. That’s why this solo retreat is perfect, there’s a lot more freedom.

I still have to be quiet and respectful, because there is going to be another person occupying the other cabin onsite. Apparently, it is a woman who is on a 3-month retreat. I am curious about her story, but I want to be respectful so I will probably not end up talking to her.

My plan is to focus on meditation, yoga, reading, writing, preparing and eating meals mindfully, and walking. I will probably also sneak a couple naps in. Naps are so pleasurable, aren’t they?
